Basically I love chips but I really try to avoid any kind of vegetable oil (soybean oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, etc) cause I've heard it's pretty bad for health. Also, natural frying oil like beef tallow seems to taste better! More traditional and savory taste I've heard. (I've not actually had tallow-fried chips - they don't seem to be available at all)

So post your favorite potato chips fried in
  • Olive oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Beef tallow (the best probably! but I can't find any)
  • Lard
  • Coconut oil (this doesn't count as seed oil)
  • Anything else that isn't vegetable oil!

I've had olive oil and avocado oil fried chips from boulder canyon and they are good. I liked the avocado oil fried ones more. I took them to a party and people were all about them. Said they were extra good. I'm not crazy about boulder canyon's olive oil chips though.

I've tried "the good crisp" too, which is fried in palm oil (this is not a seed oil) and I wasn't a huge fan. I wanted to like them but they were just a little dull and didn't have the crispy crunch I like.

Thanks for posting those gibbles chips, I've had them before - I really wanted to like them but they just didn't quite do it! From what I've read, lard isn't what it used to be - they give the pigs different food now than they used to, and it changes the lard. I remember my grandmother talking about something like that when it happened and she couldn't cook the way she wanted anymore.

So I've been looking hard for more potato chips fried in more natural oils (cause I'm pretty obsessed with this haha!) It looks like people are catching on...! I found a site pretty much dedicated to it: The Best Potato Chips Without Seed Oil - No Seed Oil They recommended "Torres" potato chips - some kind of premium chips from Spain fried in olive oil. Looks really good. I'm gonna get some and report back!

I still can't find tallow chips for sale. I found a link there to "Beefy's" Chips (kind of weird name haha) and got really excited cause it seemed perfect, but they seem to be very out of stock. I'll post the link for the future though if they ever get going!

Do you guys know of anywhere selling tallow-fried chips? I'm gonna try making some of my own even though I don't have a deep fryer. I think I can fry them in a shallow pan perhaps?
